What an honor to meet Lisa Smith from Oasis at the latest Deyan Masterclass. She and PJ Ochlan really helped us sharped our skills and dig a little deeper. Highlights included:
- How does the narrator feel about this moment? You should always know this. It makes the narrative act-able. When there’s a reason behind the narration, it gives you a place to go.
- Be judicious and careful with voices in memoirs. All voices should be filtered through the memoir’s narrator.
- Bring a present tense mentality to the script. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the past, react in real time. You’re telling the story now.
- In nonfiction, we need to believe you know what you’re talking about. Find the balance between being authoritative, but don’t talk down to your listener. Keep it a conversation, not a lecture.
None of this stuff is new information. Yet through the process of seeing other narrators get to the same place shows how applicable the same notes are in many different situations. You can always dig a little deeper, and bring another level to your performance.
Thank you Lisa and PJ for a night of solid instruction!
